The winter can be rough on our feet — leaving them dry, cracked and with thick calluses. Luckily, the winter is also the perfect time to take advantage of the cold cozy sock wearing season to moisturize and condition your feet, getting them ready for those sandals you love with Spring around the corner.
what you’ll need
Rooterra Organics Tea Tree Essential Oil (15 drops)
Organic Peppermint Oil (5 drops)
Unrefined Coconut Oil (1 tablespoon)
Coarse Epsom Salt (1/8 cup)
Coarse Sea Salt (1/8 cup)
Coarse Black Lava or Himalayan Sea Salt (optional)
Dried Peppermint Leaves (optional)
what to do
Step 1 • Mix ⅛ cup of coarse epsom salt with ⅛ cup of coarse sea salts. As an optional step, add 1 tablespoon of coarse black lava or himalayan salt.
Step 2 • Lightly stir in 1 tsp of dried peppermint leaves.
Step 3 • Mix 15 drops of Rooterra Organics Tea Tree Oil with 5 drop of peppermint oil.
Step 4 • Add 1 tablespoon of your carrier oil of choice to the tea tree and peppermint essential oil mixture — we chose unrefined coconut oil.
Step 5 • Add the essential oil and carrier oil mixture to the salts and mix well. We prefer to add the oils to the salts right before use. If you chose to include the black lava and himalayan salts they may cause the white salts to change color from the clay in the lava and himalayan salts.
Step 6 • Rub the salt mixture into your feet focusing on any callused or dry areas. We recommend doing this over a warm bowl/tub of water.
Step 7 • Drop the excess salt mixture into the warm bowl/tub of water and soak your feet for an additional 5-10 minutes.
Step 8 • Rinse your feet with warm water. If you opted to use black lava salt your feet will likely have black residue on them that you need to rinse off thoroughly.
Step 9 • Pat your feet dry.
Step 10 • Moisturize your feet with your favorite heavy lotion. As an optional step, mix 1-2 drops of tea tree with your favorite heavy lotion prior to applying to your feet.
Step 11 • Put on your favorite pair of warm winter socks to lock in the moisture overnight.
Step 12 • Wake up with rested, minty, and moisturized feet in the morning!
Repeat as needed through the winter months!
WHy We Believe it Works
One of the dreaded side effects of winter is dry skin. Feet are particularly susceptible dry skin in the winter months. Dry feet usually results in cracked heels with thick calluses. Rubbing the soles of your feet with coarse salts will exfoliate the calluses on your feet, removing the dead skin and softening your feet. In addition to exfoliating your skin, Black Hawaiian Salt, also known as Black Lava salt, will absorb dirt, oil and impurities due to the activated charcoal infused in the salt.
The Rooterra Organics Tea Tree Oil mixed with the salts acts as a natural antibacterial and antifungal, keeping your feet healthy, while the peppermint oil acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, leaving your feet with a refreshing cooling effect.
The Unrefined Coconut Oil, which is rich in lauric acid, and therefore a great antimicrobial and moisturizer, ties it all together.
The final steps of moisturizing your feet and then putting on your cozy socks locks in the moisture overnight so your skin has a long time to absorb the moisture, leaving you with soft smooth feet in the morning. What better time to wear your favorite cozy socks to heal your dry cracked feet than over the winter?
Pro Tips: If you are prone to or currently have a fungal infection, you may want to speak with your podiatrist before applying a thick moisturizer and socks. Moisture, in some cases, can exacerbate the fungal infection.
